SPEAK//EASIER

Tough Topics, Great Food

Coming later this year.

Young people are facing numerous complex challenges, such as the Earth Crisis, growing inequality, and insecurity worldwide and are often left to process these significant issues on their own. Navigating these incredibly sensitive issues is something that school leaders and their teams are increasingly finding difficult to find space for.

Through SPEAK//EASIER, our goal is to foster radical empathy and promote diversity through engaging in conversations while eating great food. The project encourages brave dialogue between young people, as well as developing classroom guidelines to ensure inclusive and honest conversations can help build a safe and respectful environment for all students. These conversations increase students' agency and develop a foundation for participating in a thriving and diverse democracy.

It's often said that ‘food feeds the soul’. There is no mistake in why SPEAK//EASIER happens when we are eating great food. Communal eating increases social bonding and feelings of well-being and enhances one’s sense of contentedness and being embedded within the community.

The project will train teachers and young artists to hold space for young people in schools to have complex conversations. We are aiming to start with a small number of schools with the intention of expanding later in 2024.

If you’re a teacher interested in finding out more about how to get involved in the project then please get in touch with our Artistic Director, Rob Watt at: rob@theatre-centre.co.uk.

It surprised me the amount of stories that people shared. I’ve never really seen people open up so it was good to see people open up and talk about their experiences
