Caroline Wilkes

Caroline is associate director at New Vic Theatre, Stoke and Associate Artist at Birmingham Rep. She has been an RTYDS Connect Artist, a Graeae Beyond artist, a JMK Regional Theatre recipient and a Leverhulme Arts Scholar. She directed the last two years Early Years Christmas productions at Birmingham Rep with integrated Makaton - both productions ran at the Rep for 4 weeks followed by 4 week tour to non traditional theatre spaces. Caroline has worked extensively as a director and theatre maker across the UK. She was the founder of a gap year for actors who could not afford drama school which was accredited through the Open College Network. Each year's cohort devised original theatre productions which toured to schools, arts centres, prisons, community venues and theatres. She makes large scale intergenerational community participation theatre projects as well as co-creating productions with a Women's Refuge, a project supporting women who have experienced complex trauma and within mental health settings. Caroline has curated and directed festivals of new writing for pub theatre venues in Birmingham. She is the artistic director for a large collective of theatre makers across the Midlands. She was commissioned to write Salvaged for Bedlam Festival of Arts and Mental Heath (Midlands Arts Centre, Birmingham Rep) based on experiences of women in an acute mental health hospital and she is currently adapting a Michael Morpurgo novel for stage working with Birmingham Children's Hospital, Birmingham Rep and the New Vic. As well as being a theatre director, Caroline is a carer for her disabled son - access and inclusion is central to her practices.
